During biblical times the cedars of Lebanon was an ingredient of one of the world's earliest perfumes. It was also included in ancient Egyptian embalming preparations and used to make sarcophagi, many of which remain in good condition after 3000 years. Steam distillation from the wood, stumps, and sawdust yields a yellow, orange, or amber oil. Sweet and tenacious, its scent delivers a warm camphoraceous top note and a woody balsamic undertone.
